My name is Claire Bland and this is my story after 30 years of addiction to drugs and alcohol due to childhood trauma, domestic abuse and poor mental health
My recovery journey has been one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences of my life. Addiction affected my health, my confidence, and my relationships, and there was a time when I couldn’t imagine a different future. Everything changed when I made the decision to ask for help and fully commit to my recovery.
Recovery hasn’t been about being perfect; it’s been about taking one day at a time and continuing to move forward. With support, determination, and a willingness to change, I have rebuilt my life and discovered strengths I never knew I had.
As my confidence grew, I challenged myself to achieve things I never thought possible. I completed the Ambassadors Course, Peer Mentoring Level 1 and Level 2, and a Digital Skills course. These achievements have helped me grow in confidence, develop new skills, and given me the opportunity to support and encourage others on their own recovery journey.
An important part of my recovery is attending Kickback Recovery every week. The support, encouragement, and friendships I have found there have become a huge part of my life. Being part of such a positive recovery community reminds me how far I’ve come and motivates me to keep moving forward.
One of my proudest achievements came after two years in recovery when I was able to move out of The Greens [which is a dry supported accommodation service in sheffield] and into a home of my own with my daughter. Having our own house has given us stability, independence, and a fresh start—something I once believed would never be possible.
Today, life is good. I have an amazing relationship not only with the daughter I live with, but also with my three other daughters and my four wonderful grandchildren. Spending time with my family is something I treasure, and being present in their lives is one of the greatest gifts that recovery has given me.
I am proud of how far I have come and excited about what the future holds. Recovery has given me hope, purpose, and opportunities I never thought I’d have. By sharing my story, I hope to show others that recovery is possible. No matter how difficult the past may be, with the right support, determination, and belief in yourself, you can build a life you are proud of. I know I have, and I am grateful every day for the life I have today.
