March 2021 I woke up to a banging on the door, still drunk and I had passed out on the settee again.

I got up and opened the door and stood there was my mum and my then 7 year old daughter whose look of pure sadness and disappointment on her face as I've let her down yet again. I had planned for her to come to see me as I was only allowed supervised contact after I had signed a voluntary section 20 for her to live with my mum and dad while I focused on getting better …

“But all it did was make me drink more”

I looked at her face, and a switch somewhere inside me I knew I couldn’t do this again. I had lost my car, my license, my daughter, no one trusted me and any little bit of respect inside I had left had gone. I knew I wouldn’t do this again enough is enough.

I accessed a structured recovery program and started attending smart meetings as often as I could. I put every part of me into getting well, one week passed, then two then 8 and before you knew it, I was celebrating a year. I had found myself again. I was enjoying life, my daughter was allowed unsupervised visits and was slowly returning to my care. I started volunteering and I knew this was my forte. If i can do it surely, I can help others achieve their goals.

4 years on I am now working full time as a support worker for people living in supported housing to aid their recovery and I love it. My daughter has been back home 3 years, I’m driving again and have a wonderful partner. Never did I ever believe I would have the life I have now, nor did I think that I deserved it… But I do!

And it all started with me reaching out for help. It’s not an easy road but its the best road I could have taken, and I learn more about myself every day.
